Essa é a primeira série criada do universo Tenchi Muyo, inicialmente contava com 6 episódios que foram produzidos em 1992-1993. A segunda parte dos OVAs foram produzidos em 1994-1995 e correspondem as capítulos 8-13. Entre 2003 e 2005 foi lançada a terceira parte dos OVAs com os capítulos 14 ao 19. Foram criados alguns especiais que fazem parte dos OVAs!
Tenchi Masaki era um garoto normal de 17 anos de idade até o dia em que acidentalmente solta o pirata espacial Ryoko, de uma caverna em que ela foi selada há 700 anos, pois as pessoas pensavam que ela era um demônio. Em uma série de eventos, quatro outras garotas alienígenas aparecem na casa de Masaki, enquanto ele aprende muito de sua herança que ele nunca conheceu e lida com cinco garotas alienígenas, cada uma com algum tipo de interesse romântico por ele.
